I recently gave a workshop (Prof. Dr. Dr. Laura Lee here) on how to record a demo or rather: how to make the most out of recording your demos. I made a big fuss about demos being for a limited (!) audience only and that you shouldn't show your demo to just anyone. To boil it down, one of my points was to only show your demos to the people whose opinion you really value. For the workshop, I dug out my old demos that eventually evolved into Wasteland and tried to reverse engineer my songwriting process. And since the record is done and set in stone/tape/mp3 wave forms by now and all decisions have been made, these demos do not need to serve the purpose anymore to justify a song/sound/songwriting decision I've made (or just timestamp it so I don't forget). So now, I feel like I can share them with a broader audience. Maybe you find it interesting to see what ideas were there from the beginning and what was added later and what felt like the essence of the song to me at first.
